A disconcerting hush has fallen over the Mozambican port city of Pemba. It has served as a drilling logistics hub for Eni and Anadarko in northern Mozambique, but is now merely a waiting room for the host of logistics firms, oil and gas service contractors, chandlers, hoteliers and catering firms that moved in two years ago.

By now, these businesses expected to have been put to work building Mozambique mega LNG project at Afungi. Around 600 people were laid off between November 2014 and February 2015 as gas exploration wrapped up in Pemba, Omar Saide, the councillor in charge of economic development in Pemba municipality, told Interfax. Anadarko concluded its exploration phase in the first quarter of 2015.
