The Member for The Straits – White Bay North.

MR. MITCHELMORE:Mr. Speaker, for years the government has said we need 330 megawatts of power to meet Island needs and to displace Holyrood, and remaining power from Muskrat Falls would go to Nova Scotia and sold on the spot market.

Roddickton has a pellet plant capable of producing 50,000 metric tons of pellets, which can put 250,000-megawatt hours into the system.

I ask the Minister of Natural Resources: What has happened to this carbon neutral power that can take the equivalent of thousands of homes off the grid, and why was biomass ignored in your alternatives?

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Minister of Natural Resources.

SOME HON. MEMBERS: Hear, hear!

MR. KENNEDY: Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

We continue to work closely with the owner of Holson Forest Products in an attempt to ensure the viability of that plant, Mr…

Algeria plays a key role in world energy markets as a leading producer and exporter of natural gas and liquefied natural gas. Algeria’s energy mix in 2010 was almost exclusively based on fossil fuels, especially natural gas (93%). However the country has enormous renewable energy potential, mainly solar, which the government is(or should) trying to harness by launching an ambitious Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Program.

The Program consists of generating 22,000 MW of power from renewable sources between 2011 and 2030, of which 12,000 MW will be meant for domestic consumption and the rest for export. The Program is focused on developing and expanding the use of renewable resources, such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydropower, in order to diversify energy sources and promote sustainable development of the country.

Around 60 solar photovoltaic plants, concentrating solar power plants, wind farms as well as hybrid power plants are to…

Panchabuta-Renewable Energy & Cleantech in India

According to reports, scientists of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed a stove that uses agricultural waste as fuel; it is reported to cut the use of LPG by as much as 25%.

Called Ojas, this stove uses pellets of churned paddy stalks as fuel. A small fan is attached to the stove, which blows air on to the lit pellets, enabling full combustion and giving a perfect, blue flame, said Shashidhar N, production manager of Sacks Right Energy Innovations, the company that holds the R&D and production rights of the stove.

The stove is being sold for Rs3,000 and has a rechargeable battery, which is used to power the fan. A fully charged battery can power the fan for four hours. The fan has a regulator, which controls the flame, like the regulator on LPG stoves. Shobha Ravikumar, a user of Ojas, said this stove is an…

The new trendy fuel being proposed to replace the EPA/Hansen vilified coal is wood and/or biomass.

One biomass power plant “will emit 1,732 tons per day of carbon dioxide to produce 380,000 MWh of power annually, an emission rate of 3,327 lbs of CO2/MWh. For comparison carbon dioxide emission rates are 2,117 lbs/MWh for existing coal plants,  1,314 lbs/MWh for existing gas plants
and 760 lbs/MWh for new power plants.”

Lets put that in a table.

Fuellbs of CO2/Megawatt Hour
Biomass3,327
Coal2,117
Older Natural Gas1,314
New Natural Gas760

“wood fueled biomass power plants emit about 50% more CO2 per MWh than existing coal plants, 150% more than existing natural gas plants and 330% more than new gas power plants.”

Thats right. Biomass/Wood produce 330% more CO2 than a new super-efficient natural gas power plant burning natural gas. And thanks to fracking the gas is…

Biomass, in ecology, is the mass of living biological organisms in a given area or ecosystem at a given time. Biomass can refer to species biomass, which is the mass of one or more species, or to community biomass, which is the mass of all species in the community. It can include microorganisms, plants or animals.[4] The mass can be expressed as the average mass per unit area, or as the total mass in the community.

How biomass is measured depends on why it is being measured. Sometimes the biomass is regarded as the natural mass of organisms in situ, just as they are. For example, in a salmon fishery, the salmon biomass might be regarded as the total wet weight the salmon would have if they were taken out of the water. In other contexts, biomass can be measured in terms of…

People are making the move to traditional fuels. Maybe it’s because we had so much bad weather throughout 2012, not to mention the high cost of oil, but people seem to be talking more about the need for heat in their homes.

We are the seventh most oil-dependent country on earth, with over 60% of our energy coming from oil. But, because oil, coal and gas reserves are being depleted worldwide, we’re constantly being told to look to renewable energy sources, with wood being most obvious.

In 2013, we’ll be hearing more about biomass fuel, which includes not only wood (chips, pellets and forest shavings) but also grasses, agricultural crops, human and animal waste and materials that normally go to dumps. You simply burn it.

Biomass can be used to create heat and electricity and people have also installed biomass boilers purely for domestic purposes. Also beginning here are district…

Energy Matters

Background:

With regard to ethanol production and business, there are  categories of companies with different technical & business focuses. The first category of companies are those completely focussing on making innovations on enzymes. The second category of companies focus completely on pre-treatment /hydrolysis /fermentation processes & technology development. Under this category of entrepreneurs, there are companies which focus only on making fermentable sugars and sell this to actual fermenters who do the last step of making ethanol.

In this post we will consider certain innovations taking place in the area of enzymes. This space is dominated by companies like Novozyme, DSM, Dupont, Ionogen etc. plus quite a lot of microbilogists and biotechnologists from academics either working on their own or in collaboration with companies.

Enzymes(from Fungi) for Hydrolysis of cellulose to fermentable sugars:

Prior to enzymatic hydrolysis, cellulose is pre-treated to make it soft and amenable to enzyme panetration &…

The Renewable Energy Industrial Index (RENIXX ®World), is composed of the world’s 30 largest renewable energy companies.  The 30 companies get the majority of their income from wind, solar, biofuel, geothermal, hydropower or fuel cells.  The stock index was set up  to allow the shareholder to profit by the expected surge in value of these companies as the green revolution unfolded. Unfortunately for the investors, the stock value which surged, peaked in the 2007 -2008 timeframe, has been a downhill ride since then.  The glib promises of the performance of these renewables has not materialized and the Nations that have heavily subsidized these renewables can no longer afford them.
A Washington Times-Community posting authored by Steve Goreham titled “So, how’s your green energy stock doing?” discusses the history of the Index.  For instance,  in a private meeting, Al Gore impressed the Deutsche Bank Asset Management  team causing them to…

Almost anybody and everybody require energy. You’ll find Renewable along with non Imagerenewable energies present on earth. Non renewable poweris frequentlyconcerning causing pollution and is scarce due to excessive demand. Renewable energy though has low demand, but causes far lesser pollution and is alsoeasily available. Solar poweris among thehottestsorts ofsustainable energy used today. This energy may be harnessed since centuries and is actually a source that can never become obsolete or diminish, but as with every other energy, there are variouspros and cons forsolar technology too. These advantages and disadvantages ofsolar technologycan beimperative that you know since that will decide exactly how can youmake use of the energy and what extent.

Breakdown ofsolar power:

Solar Panel Technology is created by harnessing the strength ofsunlight. There are severalpros and cons forsolar technology. Solar cells, often known aselectricity cellsare used to trap sunshine rays and…
